ugh so i saw this post going around, or similar to it, i couldn’t find the original but this is going to have to suffice until i find the original on my dash again.
nevertheless, i wanted to address this. when i first saw it, there was some things that didn’t exactly sit right with me.
i think the first thing that popped out was the fact that the terms on the “tags” aren’t derogatory terms. It’s not like the Muslim’s tag had “terrorist”, the gay person had the F-word, and the black person had the N-word (though if they actually used the N-word that would be an entirely different load of bullshit if they aren’t black but that’s another story). So the first thing I thought was, what’s wrong about those “labels” and identifying with them? There’s nothing wrong with being a Muslim, there’s nothing wrong with being gay, and there’s nothing wrong with being black, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with identifying as those three things (i use that as a blanket term because identify as a race? what? okay). I know people are going to tell me that’s not the point of it (the point maybe being that oh well people associate those labels with bad things), and that’s great fantastic and I don’t really care what the point was because whatever the point was they couldn’t really get it across well. Why is it bad to be “labeled” those three things up there, Muslim, gay, and black? Again, those are not derogatory terms used to describe those 3 people, so it’s making it seem like being those 3 things is bad.
Another thing that didn’t sit right with me. This is basically the same logic, if I even call it that, as the colorblind bullshit a lot of people pull when they’re addressing racism (though now I guess it’s transcending into LGBT too?????). Because erasing what someone chooses to identify as ISN’T GOING TO SOLVE ANY PROBLEMS. Trying to erase someone’s identity, whether it be Muslim, gay, or black, is a shitty thing to do. No. What we should be doing is learning to live and get along with others who are different than us, whether they be any of those three things up in those pictures. Not try to make everyone the same and melt everyone together with the ~colorblind~ bullshit. Just no. There is a huge difference between not judging someone because of their religion, orientation, and/or race, and totally ignoring it, thus ignoring their struggles not only with the individual but also with their community. Just no. Stop.
This post is super shitty and I’m sorry but I just had to fucking say something. Whatever the message is it was really told in the shittiest way possible.
